Map style: Historical

This 1784 map titled Sketch of the Surprise of German Town by the American Forces commanded by General Washington October 4th 1777 is based on a field sketch by British surveyor John Hills. Considered the best contemporary plan of the battle, this map depicts military positions, troop movements and roads used throughout the engagement. In addition to his Germantown map, Hills produced sketches of the Battle of Monmouth and of the British army’s route from Philadelphia to New York in 1778.
