In 1775 British army captain John Gunning wrote “this Country and its Inhabitants” are “habituated by Notions of Independence.” This collection from the American Revolution Institute’s library catalogue features patriot letters home chronicling the influence of the Declaration of Independence.

On July 9, 1776, after hearing the reading of the Declaration of Independence, New Yorkers tore down the gilt equestrian statue of King George III located on the Bowling Green.
