Weekend Supervisor

The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, a nonprofit historical and educational organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., seeks a part-time weekend supervisor to be responsible for all aspects of  museum operations during public weekend hours. The major aspects of this work are overseeing visitor services, docent management, security and member services. The museum’s weekend hours are Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday, 12-4 p.m.

The weekend supervisor will lead all museum operations on the weekends, working with the weekend receptionist and volunteer docent team. The weekend supervisor will supervise museum visitation and in-person ticket transactions (including performing transactions as needed), with the goal to ensure that museum visitors and members of the Society have an enjoyable experience at Anderson House, the 1905 mansion and National Historic Landmark that is the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati.

Major duties include:

  • Supervising the part-time weekend receptionist and volunteer docents on duty;
  • Managing visitor and member services, including assisting the docents in greeting and orienting visitors and members, assisting with on-site ticket purchases, overseeing scheduled tour groups and leading tours as needed;
  • Displaying a working knowledge of the Institute’s activities in order to address a wide range of inquiries from the public and Society members on subjects including museum group tours, site rentals, library research and member services;
  • Implementing security procedures, including opening and closing the museum spaces;
  • Assisting with museum shop and ticket sales; and
  • Assisting with the management of historical programs during weekend museum hours, as needed.

 

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree with experience in visitor services and an interest in museum management and historic sites is required. Experience working with volunteers and giving tours in a museum setting is preferred. A successful candidate will have demonstrated customer service experience and interpersonal skills (pleasant, resourceful and professional demeanor). The weekend supervisor must be trustworthy and display good judgment.

An ability to work most holiday periods throughout the year (should they fall on or near a weekend) is required. This position may involve moderate physical activity such as standing for long periods of time, climbing stairs and lifting tables and chairs.

 

Hours and Salary

The weekend supervisor will work Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Compensation for this position is $22 per hour.
